I tried for a couple hours to stream lossless audio using both the Home Hub and Chromecast Audio, but the combination was a bridge too far. Separately the devices work with Deezer HiFi and lossless audio, but not when combined. I asked Deezer support but have yet to hear back from anyone there. I started chatting with Google support online, but that was like a soup sandwich. All over the place and impossible to work with.
So, all you have to do, if you just want audio, is pick up a Chromecast Audio, which is a a little device that gives you access to a three-and-a-half millimeter audio jack. But are the picture quality and sound quality up to scratch? We look forward to testing that out in an in-depth full review very soon. We were only played a very brief audio clip from YouTube and the Home Hub did struggle to be heard over the hustle and bustle in the background.

Interesting to hear you say they've become laggy. I just got one from a BF deal and have found the screen to be very laggy - I thought it might have been damaged in transport. Spotify crashes when I try to resume playback after pause. It's cumbersome to get to smart device controls. For all the hope I had for it, it's now just an oversized voice assistant. If your connection seems slow, check your Google Home app to see who and what’s connected to your Wi-Fi and check to see if your network is prioritizing any particular devices.
Connectivity issues
Fear of missing out plays a huge role on the consumer side as does technological change for the sake of commerce on the hardware manufacturers' side. For background listening Google Home is fine, and you can at least combine two of them for proper stereo, but music replay isn’t really its primary forté. Once it has found your Philips Hue hub it will then ask you to assign specific lights to specific rooms so you can ask Google Home to turn on, say, just the lights in the kitchen or living room.
It's really convenient and it can sound, frankly, just as good as anything else you play on your big home stereo. It can be customised to only show pictures with certain people in them and Google claims the Home Hub is smart enough to be able to automatically filter out photos of questionable quality. Not as good as an ultraRendu to usb in but I am much happier when my wife uses this instead of the audio out. Still have to try the usb-power-and-network adapter he suggested. Voice control to call itself up - an endless recursive money machine... I can't begin to imagine the horrors I'd experience if I tried to use Alexa or Siri or Google voice for controlling my music library.
You got the impression in a quieter environment it’s probably going to be fine playing in the background or serving up the odd music track or perhaps an instruction video in the kitchen. For extended music playback, we're not so sure. The display gives the impression it's floating on top of the speaker section, which is a forward-firing full range driver, as well as a pair of mics for picking up your voice commands. I've found voice control to be more pain than gain.
